Hasbro Card Games Review

Does your family have a weekly (or more often) game night? Playing games is a great way to connect and spend some quality time with each other. We all know life is fast paced, so why not take a couple of hours once a week and play a game or two? Hasbro knows the importance of quality family time and they are an industry leader in board & card games. They have the largest selection of games for people of all ages.

I recently had the opportunity to review three of Hasbro's card games that are new for 2010! They were Sorry! Revenge, Mille Bornes and Yahtzee Hands Down. We spent a long weekend in New Hampshire recently and brought these games with us to try out while we were up there.

The first one we played was Mille Bornes. It's bascially a game about going on a 1000 mile road trip, but will all sorts of "hazzards" along the way. Each player starts out with six cards and like a traditional sort of card game, you would go around the table and pick a card. You can either play it or discard it, depending on what it is. The goal is to drive through your journey as carefully as possible so that you can finish first, but the other players in the game can throw out "hazzards" that effect your trip. They include things like getting a flat tire, getting into an accident or running out of gas. You can't proceed until you have fixed your problem (ie getting a repair card to fix damage done in an accident).

This game was loads of fun and was simple enough for my oldest son to play (he's almost six). He can read, but I think even someone who can't read would be able to play this based on simply looking at the pictures on the cards. We absolutely loved this and have played it several times so far.

"Put your foot down… it’s time to play MILLE BORNES! Play distance cards and speed towards the finish line, or put the brakes on your opponent with nasty hazards! Drive carefully, because they’ll be playing hazards on you too. Out of gas? Play a Gasoline card. Got in an accident? Play your Repairs card. Be the first player to travel 1000 miles and win!

Includes 115 cards, instructions and scoresheet. For 2, 3, 4 or 6 players. Ages 8 and up".

The next game we played was Yahtzee Hands Down. Instead of rolling dice, like in the orginal Yahtzee game, you have dice cards. If you have ever played the Yahtzee game, you may remeber that you try to make classic combinations like 3 of a kind, 4 of a kind, small & large straights, or a full house. The basic premise of the card versions is that you have to pit your hand against the other players and try to score the highest.

I think this game is similar in a way to Uno, because a lot of the combonations you're trying to get need to be the same color, which makes it a bit more challenging. It's receommended for ages 8 and up, but I did try this with my almost six year old and he was a little bit confused, but still had fun. Overall, this game was a blast and definitley made for a lot of fun the couple of times we played it! Yahtsee Hands Down is definitley a game you could play all night with some friends and good snacks!

"Keep your wits about you and your eye on the cards! Collect dice cards to make classic combinations: 3 of a kind, 4 of a kind, small straight, large straight, full house and YAHTZEE! Re-roll by discarding cards you don’t need and taking a chance on new ones. But here’s the twist – pit your hand against another player’s. Score high and win the Combo card points. It’s great YAHTZEE fun in a card game!

Includes 12 combo cards, 12 chance cards, 84 dice cards, 1 starter card, 1 reminder card, 1 combo sheet and instructions. For 2 to 6 players. Ages 8 and up".

The third game we reviewed was Sorry! Revenge. My personal favorite by a mile because it gave my son the chance to impress everyone with his addition and subtraction skills. What you're supposed to do is get 21 cards without going over. It's definitely not as easy as it sounds, which is what makes it so much fun! If you get your hand to equal 21, you get to flip a pawn to home. But if you end up with more than 21, then all the other players get to flip a pawn over except for you. There are four pawns you have to flip to win the game. It's honestly, a blast to play this game and I think out of the three, this was our favorite.

"Win the race to flip all of your pawn cards home and sweet revenge is yours! Take turns to play number and action cards to change the play pile’s total. Get the pile to 21 without going bust to get one of your pawn cards home. But watch out – someone could play a SORRY! card and steal your win!

Includes 109 cards, 1 reminder card and instructions. For 2 to 4 players. Ages 6 and up".

Huge thanks to the folks at Hasbro for the opportunity to try out these games. All three were so much fun and I am looking forward to playing them for a long time to come. These Hasbro card games would be awesome to take on a camping trip, road trip, or simply play at home. And it's never too early to start stalking up on stocking stuffers. Christmas is only five months away!
